We are sitting in the lobby of the MRI Suite. We have completed Bree's doctor's visit. Dr Bell seems nice and very knowledgeable. He spent a lot of time with Bree. I think she likes him, too. She is still very quiet and nervous about her MRI, now. He talked to her awhile, asking her, and me - since I'm the one who witnesses her seizures (well, me and her sister Allie, but of course Allie is not here) tons of questions. Then began her exam. He looked in her eyes, had her follow the light with her eyes only. Then he did the same thing with his fingers. He had her cover one eye and then the other, doing the same thing with one eye. He had her look up, look down, look side to side with her eyes only. She had to touch her nose then his finger with one finger. He tested all her reflexes. He tested her sensation with a tuning fork, I believe it's called. He had her squeeze his hands as hard as she could, push against his hands, hold her arms up and not let him push them down, he pulled against her hands and told him not to let him pull her, (testing her strength) then he had her get down and walk for him, balance first on one foot then the other. Hop on her right foot then her left. Then she had to stand on her tip toes and on her heels. Then walk on her heels and then her top toes. I'm sure I'm probably leaving something out that he had her do. After the very thorough exam he had her get back on the bed and explain what she was in for this week. The MRI. The sleep deprivation EEG. The blood work, the spinal tap. The admission to the hospital for constant EEG with the audio and video monitoring. Why she has to have all these tests. And how they will most likely treat her seizures. He told her that they would get her seizures under control and it was very possible that with proper treatment they would stop. He said that we would know more after testing and he would discuss treatment after testing is complete but it would probably be medication at least for now. He just has to figure out what type of medicine to put her on.
So after the appointment we went up to have blood drawn. She had CBC, liver panels, electrolytes, tox screen, (to test for possible toxins in her blood) drug screen, I don't know what else, just about everything possible to test for. Iron counts too. She had urine tested. Now we are waiting for the MRI. After that it is spinal tap time. My poor girl is in for a long, long day.
Tonight she has to stay up all night long. She's going to be so sore and tired and she won't even get to rest.
